Getting Kids to Eat Healthy

Eating fresh broccoli from our garden
With the rising rate of obesity we make it a point to strike a balance between healthy eating and allowing our boys to be kids.  The hubby and I try our best to eat healthy on a daily basis and exercise regularly, not only for ourselves, but also as an example to our boys.  Remember, they’re always watching, listening and mimicking.  So how do we do this, especially with how busy life can get?

We first started by making it a point to exclusively breastfeed our boys from birth to at least 1 year of age.  Now I know this can be very difficult, so if you’re not able to breastfeed, please don’t put this pressure on yourself.  Getting your baby fed and healthy, whether through breastmilk or formula is what’s most important.  Next, when our boys first started eating I made every meal they ate from scratch.  I’m not going to lie, this took a lot of planning, effort and time, but it also saved us a ton of money!  I would buy fresh produce, blend it thoroughly, store in freezer safe containers and defrost as needed.  I would also grill chicken breast, mix it with different types of veggies and freeze.  With each meal prepared I would make it a point to expose my little one to a new spice or seasoning.  This helped to diversify their palettes and as they continued to grow it allowed them to seamlessly eat and enjoy the home cooked foods hubby and I eat on a daily basis.

One of our meals

Now I know you’re thinking, how can you eat a home cooked meal every day?  This is how we did it and continue to do so.  I dedicate one day per week to prepare meals.  On this day I usually prepare 2-3 different meals.  I do this so that we can eat a variety of foods throughout the week without getting tired of eating the same thing.  We’re now a family of four, so sometimes our meals may run out towards the end of the week, and that’s when I’ll usually prepare an easy meal in either my crockpot or baked in the oven.

With that being said, are there days when I am just too dang exhausted or sick to prepare a meal?  Of course!  I believe in striking a balance in every facet of life and this is no exception.  On days like this I’ll either ask hubby to prepare something or we’ll heat up some frozen pizza or meal.  Or if I’m craving a hamburger, Chick fil-a, or a chicken cantina bowl from Taco Bell we go and get it.  We believe that having this every once in a while is fine.  I would say that we typically eat out about 2-4 times a month.

The beginning stages of our garden
Our meals normally consist of 1-2 veggies, a protein and a starch or carb.  My hubby hates veggies, but sees the need for them and knows his body will thank him for it later.  I also make smoothies on a regular basis for myself and my family.  The boys have had them since they were toddlers and absolutely love them!  I pack them with different combinations of fruits and veggies like spinach leaves, carrots, cucumbers, avocadoes, bananas, mangoes, peaches, strawberries, pineapple, pears, grapes, celery, ginger, etc…  We also have a garden in our backyard that the boys love to care for with their dad and they’re always so excited to be able to eat something from there.  We planted collards, kale, lettuce, spinach, okra, tomatoes, strawberries, blackberries, bell peppers and cucumbers. Now that’s truly organic!

What’s the point of me telling you all this? It’s to show that we are the ones who control what our kids consume at the end of the day.  Continue to expose them to healthy food options, allow them to get involved in preparing what they eat and watch them get excited and actually enjoy it!  It takes time, effort, patience and planning, but at the end of the day isn’t it worth it?  Your bodies and bank accounts will thank you later!

The Low Down...Where Have I Been??

Hi Guys!

I know, I know it’s been a really long time since I last posted!  I honestly don’t have any excuses other than two little boys have been rocking my world.  From 7 am every morning until 8:30/9 pm every night it’s constant go, go, go.  I am extremely exhausted by the time they go to bed and that’s usually the time that I’m able to shower, tidy up the house (yes, I do this every single night) and have some me time.  I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m an introvert and it’s really important for me to have some “me” time or else I start experiencing anxiety and panic attacks.  I need that decompression time because during the day I literally don’t have a moment to myself.  Life has been moving so fast and quite hectic, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.  I cherish these days that I’m able to be with my boys while they’re young and mommy is still their favorite girl.

To get you up to speed, Ian turned 2 about a month ago and man, he sure does act his age!  Isaac used to attack himself, well now Ian attacks me. He knows better than to attack his brother or dad, so guess who’s the punching bag?  We’re working on this and boy, it’s tough because he may be little, but that boy packs a lot of power!  Also, little man has been struggling with sinuses since last fall and has had a non-stop runny nose.  We’ve taken him to the ENT and he was supposed to have his enlarged adenoids removed, but we had to cancel that.  That’s definitely another post!  We’re going to take him to see another ENT recommended by our awesome pediatrician, so hopefully all goes well!  We also found the culprit responsible for Ian’s eczema.  We made a food journal of everything he ate for about 2 weeks and narrowed it down to blueberries, blackberries, red/purple grapes, guava, and red cherries.  Basically any fruit with a red, purple or deep berry coloring to it.  Once we stopped feeding him those fruits in conjunction with using Lush’s Dream Cream his skin cleared right up. I’ll also write another more detailed post about this and all the products we’re able to use with his sensitive and extremely dry skin.

On to Isaac!  He’s 4 now and amazes us every day.  I know every parent thinks their kid is so smart, which they should!  We’re no different and strongly believe in nurturing that and providing the necessary resources to help them thrive.  Isaac has been speaking clearly, using advanced concepts and has built up quite the vocabulary for a 4 year old.  He’s been learning to read and is always drawn to math/science concepts.  He’s very willful/stubborn, assertive and is growing more independent (putting on his clothes, brushing/flossing his own teeth, wiping himself after BO, getting his own snacks/foods out of the fridge, buckling himself in his car seat, etc…)  It’s just so cute to see my forever baby growing up into a little boy.  He’s also out and about every day.  We’re very grateful to have a kid friendly neighborhood that’s diverse.  He goes out with his dad every evening before dinner and plays outside with the elementary aged kids.  It’s literally 10-20 kids and makes us so happy to see White, Black, Latino, Asian, Indian, and mixed kids all playing together!  He also won a spot in pre-k for his assigned elementary school. This is something we’re really excited about because it’s a great school/program, it’s 5 days a week and it’ll make his transition to kindergarten even easier, and it’s FREE!  We definitely feel like we’ve won the lottery for sure!

I have also been exploring advanced education options and possible careers that may interest me in the future.  Once our kids are all in pre-k/elementary it’ll be time for me to get back to it!  I know it’ll probably be quite challenging to get back into the work force after years of being out of it to raise our kids, but we anticipated this before deciding I would become a stay at home mom.  This is why I’m going to make sure I’m passionate about my future career, knowing that I’ll most likely have to start from the bottom and work my way up to where I want to be.  For me the most important thing will be loving my career and having work-life balance.

That’s where we are in a nutshell.  I will be sure to keep you posted going forward and stay tuned because I will be vlogging our crazy family in the future!
